Well Being Support

“A mentally healthy school is one that adopts a whole-school approach to mental health and wellbeing. It is a school that helps children flourish, learn and succeed by promoting opportunities for them, and the adults around them, to develop the strengths and coping skills that underpin resilience. A mentally healthy school sees positive mental health and wellbeing as fundamental to its values, mission and culture. It is a school where child, staff and parent/carer mental health and wellbeing is seen as ‘Everybody’s business’. (Anna Freud Centre for Children and Families)

Over the course of their education children spend over 7,800 hours at school. With such a high amount of time spent in the classroom, schools provide an ideal environment for good emotional wellbeing and identifying early behaviour changes and signs of mental distress.

The social and emotional skills, knowledge and behaviours that young people learn in the classroom can help them to build resilience and set the pattern for how they can manage their mental health throughout their lives.

Emotional wellbeing is a clear indicator of academic achievement, success and satisfaction in later life. Evidence shows that mental health and wellbeing programmes can lead to significant improvements in children’s mental health, social and emotional skills.

Wellbeing provision in schools can also lead to reductions in negative classroom behaviour and bullying.
